Donna Torres teaches botanical illusration at Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden in Miami, Florida. Students work primarily from fresh plant material procured from the garden's large tropical plant collection. Seeking accuracy for her botanical paintings, Donna studied botationcal illustration with Priscilla Fawcett, former illustrator for Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden. She has an MFA in drawing and painting from Florida International Univeristy. Her paintings have been primarily motivated by her study of shamanism and plants used in ritual and medicinal settings in South America. Her work has been exhibited widely in the US and abroad. She has taught botanical art workshops in the US, Nepal, Chile, Brazil and Colombia. In 2004, as recipient of an ASBA Grant, she taught botanical illustration to members of the indigenous community of San Pedro de Atacama, Chile. Her latest seminars with the community involved the documentation of plants used in the natural dyring of camelid fibers. She also teaches oil and acrylic painting at Florida International Univeristy.
