Jane Levy Campbelll grew up in the Appalachian Mountains of West Virginia. She was educated and Princeton and Yale Universities. She now lives and paints in Portland, Oregon. Her watercolors range from postcard size to compositions a surprising twenty feet long. She combines the spareness of asian composition and formal chinese brush study with a western sense of light and structure in her still-lifes, landscapes and botanical studies. An avid gardener and hiker, Campbelll often paints botanically detailed paintings on a monumental scale. She finds challenge in creating an illusion of solid form and distinct time and place from the ethereally insubstantial materials of watercolor.
