I have always loved drawing and started my illustration career as a medical illustrator. In 1992 I gained a 1st class BA Hons degree in Graphic Design from Middlesex University in the UK specialising in Scientific Illustration.
I initially started botanical illustration after giving up work as a medical illustrator when I had my children. I was commissioned to produce two paintings of Clematis for the covers of 2 ‘British Clematis Society’ journals and I knew I had found my niche. I managed to attend a few classes with renowned UK botanical illustrator, Christabel King before emigrating to New Zealand in 2003.
I now live in Auckland, New Zealand, where I have continued to follow my dream of becoming a botanical illustrator. I have completed the Distance Learning Diploma with the Society of Botanical Artists in the UK, gaining a Distinction in 2015. Since then I have become a member of the Botanical Art Society of New Zealand (BASNZ) and exhibited in local galleries, selling work in New Zealand, Australia and the UK. I am a part time tutor in botanical illustration at Kumeu Art Centre.
I work primarily in watercolour and graphite, but have started painting on vellum which I love!
I am on the steering committee for New Zealand's part in the 'Botanical Art worldwide' exhibition, organizing our ‘Ngāi Tipu Taketake – Indigenous Flora’ exhibition which will be held at Auckland Botanic Gardens before travelling round the major centres in New Zealand.
