Join Crystal Soojeong Shin for a tour of her small urban studio in Seattle, Washington, as she shares her workspace, colored pencil tools, and equipment. She expands her limited studio space to include her workstation at the University of Washington Herbarium, where she creates scientific illustrations and visits the greenhouse and gardens to find inspiration. Crystal reflects on her journey and evolution as a botanical artist, sharing insights into her creative practice and demonstrating her signature techniques for capturing luminosity and vibrancy with colored pencil.
About Crystal
Born in Korea and now based in Seattle, Crystal Soojeong Shin is a botanical artist specializing in colored pencil. Her work is recognized for its luminous color, refined detail, and botanical accuracy. As a primary illustrator for the second edition of Flora of the Pacific Northwest, she produced hundreds of scientific illustrations for the University of Washington Herbarium. She is particularly drawn to subtle color relationships, textures, and structures that reward careful looking.
