Clematis
Clematis clarkeana
This painting is part of my project “Painting white on white”. I painted it right before the “Anemone” which was exhibited in the Hort show in 2013.
One day one of my students brought several clematises to the class room, maybe for her painting. I loved a white flower tinged with creamy yellow and faint green. I picked out several flowers, and a lovely composition came into my mind at a glance. There was no need to add anything because the flowers and leaves were in an exquisite balance. I had only to paint them before they were out of bloom. The leaves and stems were in the most effective position to enhance the whiteness of the flowers without drawing their white outlines.
