Breakfast Radishes
Rhaphanus sativus
In the 11th Annual International I showed a much larger and more formally arranged bunch of ‘French Breakfast’ Radishes. In that painting I presented the elongated variety and in this current painting I present the round variety as it would appear freshly arrived from the green grocer, pulled from a bag with leaves slightly wilted and radishes askew. My intent was to paint this humble vegetable as is, but the subject still required quite a bit of rearranging and redrawing to create the look of a casual composition. I also wanted to preserve the radishes as a tactile image, hoping the viewer will wish to touch and feel the weight of the radishes as they rest on an imaginary counter.
