STORY BEHIND THE ART OF LIZZIE SANDERS

19th Annual International

American Society of Botanical Artists & The Horticultural Society of New York

 Japanese quince

Chaenomeles sp.

My first challenge every year when preparing work for the ASBA Annual International is that the deadline is in early spring so I am working from January - in the Scottish winter! Not many colourful plants available and it gets dark about 3 o’clock in the afternoon!

So when I found the Chaenomeles (Japanese Quince) still with fruit attached I was thrilled. As the fruits had already started to turn, the specimen offered an interesting range of colors and textures. I hope viewers appreciate the intricate detail in the wrinkles and crinkles of the fruit, which were probably the most challenging aspects of the piece.
