Wave Hill European Copper Beech
Fagus sylvatica 'Atropurpurea'
Wave Hill is the pride and joy of my neighborhood here in the Bronx. It is a garden I visit frequently for inspiration and rejuvenation.
The European Copper Beech has been a constant point of interest for me. The silvery-grey, gnarly bark patterns suggest elephant hide weathered over many years. The tree (actually two merged trees) has a huge circumference, so I chose to focus on one area and added the identification plate as a humorous contrast to the ridges of the bark.
