It has been 20 years since I first came across the theme Dry Sunflower. The flower was almost monochromatic light brown, a sharply formed object, but at the same time it was so strong and beautiful that I could not believe it had finished living. I was really shocked by its strength.

Originally, I painted the dry sunflower with oils, but I am now drawing it with pencils, fascinated by its silver contrasting density.

To obtain a largely-bloomed sunflower, I devote myself to cultivating sunflowers from spring to fall. I improve the soil, sow the seeds and take care daily, all the while hoping they will wither beautifully in the fall. To grow the sunflower from scratch means to deeply understand my theme, which is an indispensable part of my creation.

It will be my great pleasure if you can feel a different aspect of the sunflower from my painting.
