Physalis
Physalis peruviana
I found this nice dried physalis while visiting my granny’s garden. And it was a love-at-first-sight subject for me. There was such beauty in the intricacies of this texture. The light of the autumn sun made it look like a Chinese lantern.
This was a very challenging subject because of its texture and details. But I already had experience in drawing dried plants.
I prefer a multilayer technique in watercolor. First of all, I usually work with big shadows. But in this case, I carefully added the pattern of the veins to define the infinitely sculptural texture on the first layer. Then I mixed some of the golden colors and layered them to make this lovely light effect. To finish, I put rusty orange in the very darkest shadows.
After doing this work, I can’t stop painting golden physalis boxes. I made a bigger work with three of them and I am thinking about another one.
