STORY BEHIND THE ART OF JANE FISHER

American basswood leaf
Tilia americana
For several years I have been fascinated by drawing leaves, often a single leaf that for some reason intrigues me enough to spend many hours trying to capture it. Two years ago I had a drawing of an oak leaf in this exhibition. At the time my husband and I were moving from our home of 28 years, and I had very little time to draw. But when I managed to sneak away, it was comforting to lose myself in the endless detail of the leaf.
This year the situation could not be more different. Comfortably settled in our new home and in the middle of a pandemic, I had nothing but time on my hands. Once again drawing was a comforting escape from reality. I will always associate this basswood leaf with the pandemic, and I am grateful for the focus it required of me when it was hard to get away from stories of illness and hardship. I’m guessing that many of us had this experience and felt fortunate to retreat to painting or drawing.
