Tulip Past Prime

Tulipa

When I first saw this tulip, presented to me as part of a bouquet for my birthday, I had no intention of painting it. However, I was caught off guard by the way its petals unfurled as the flower wilted, the colors intensifying as it died. Painting this piece was unusual for me, as I usually paint fresh flowers as opposed to wilting ones. But this specimen proved too tempting to ignore. I chose to paint on a horizontal piece of Kelmscott vellum to emphasize the flower’s width, which broadened as the specimen faded away.
