William Baffin Rosehips
Rosa “William Baffin” x3
I am starting to concentrate more and more on painting what is in my own yard. Every year I paint my William Baffin rosehips, five paintings so far. During the winter, when everything else is covered in snow, the climbing rosehips are right outside my window. There is always one branch that is so beautiful that it really needs to be painted. This time, instead of painting the rosehips their actual size, I enlarged them x3 to be able to capture the texture and color of each individual (and very different) rosehip.
I'm not normally drawn to weird subjects - and in fact, when I started this painting, it didn't seem as though it was going to be weird! But as the painting progressed, I liked the way the rosehips looked somewhat like squid or octopus - a little menacing, but in a very wonderful way. It was then that I considered entering it in the WWW show.
I hope that the viewer will see the beauty and amazing grace that rosehips possess, even when they look a bit menacing! Of all the paintings that I have done so far, this is my favorite. I am very proud that it will be included in the Weird, Wild and Wonderful show.
