Botanical Art Worldwide: America’s Flora is part of a worldwide project, which launched national exhibitions simultaneously in 25 countries on six continents. Each exhibition features original works by contemporary, resident artists, that portray its native plants. Visitors can explore a digital presentation of approximately 1,000 artworks in other countries’

exhibitions. These works represent only a small percentage of the estimated 400,000 plant species on earth. Although a small percentage, subjects range from those new to science and threatened with extinction, to those that are quite widespread and familiar.

ASBA artists worked for over four years on the project, creating 240 images of U.S. native plants. These 46 works selected by jurors feature plants from around the country, including saguaro cactus from the desert southwest, bigleaf maple from the west coast, bottlebrush buckeye from the eastern seaboard, and bloodroot, spanning the Midwestern and eastern U.S. Familiar plants are shown, including sunflowers and violets, as well as rare species such as lady’s slipper orchids. There is at least one plant from each of the 50 states.

September 26- November 27, 2019

America’s Flora will open at its third and final travel venue, the Botanical Research Institute of Texas (BRIT) on September 26, 2019. BRIT has dubbed 2019 “The Year of Botanical Art at BRIT” with numerous art-related programs, classes, and exhibits to drive public awareness of the plant world through botanical art. A number of events will be held to celebrate the exhibition’s appearance there, including a public reception on October 5. BRIT will offer a variety of classes and workshops that will draw inspiration from Botanical Art Worldwide: America’s Flora. Its growing botanical art program is designed to celebrate and honor the traditional roots of the field while at the same time encouraging artists to explore and expand the boundaries for the 21st century. Workshops include Drawing in Graphite II (10/5 – 10/26) and Botanical Watercolors II (11/9 – 11/23) with instructor, artist, and scientific illustrator Samantha Peters. Artists can also take advantage of the beautiful fall color in the nearby Fort Worth Botanic Garden, for Plein Air Painting with Watercolors (11/2).
