This exhibition features 44 artworks of plants grown, sold, and introduced by John and William Bartram, centered upon their native US plant introductions.

Following in the Bartrams' Footsteps will open at its final venue on December 15, in the beautifully restored Julia Morgan-designed Girton Hall. ASBA is very excited to have the exhibition appear on the west coast and at an institution devoted to the kind of plant research and discovery the Bartrams modeled.

Special thanks to Catherine Watters, who not only envisioned its traveling to Berkeley, but made it possible by raising the funds for its appearance here.

ASBA gratefully acknowledges the following, who made the appearance of Following in the Bartrams’ Footsteps at University of California Botanical Garden at Berkeley possible:

Prior Venue (Events have passed)

The North Carolina Botanical Garden invites you to join in any (or all!) of the twenty-six amazing events scheduled to complement the exhibition. Programs will explore the Bartrams’ legacy from all angles — literary, artistic, religious, imperialist, scientific, geographical, conservationist… with experts and talents from far and wide, including Charles Frazier (National Book Award-winning author of Cold Mountain) and Andrea Wulf (New York Times best-selling author of The Brother Gardeners: Botany, Empire and the Birth of an Obsession). We’ll be propagating seeds, sketching, painting, journaling, and learning about native plant species, like the famous carnivorous plants native to North Carolina. There’s something for everyone (including kids!) in this momentous celebration.
