The Rocky Mountain Society of Botanical Artists is pleased to invite you to ASBA’s 20th Annual Meeting and Conference in Denver, Colorado.

The Conference will be held at the Westin Denver Downtown, located one block from the famous 16th Street Mall, providing access to restaurants and shopping (with free electric shuttle buses). Within walking distance of the hotel are the excellent Denver Art Museum, the American Museum of Western Art – The Anschutz Collection, the Clyfford Still Museum, the Museum of Contemporary Art Denver, the Molly Brown House Museum, Denver Public Library’s Western History and Genealogy Department, the historic Brown Palace Hotel and shopping destination Larimer Square. The hotel is a 25 minute cab or shuttle ride from Denver International Airport.

Whether you are a beginner or an accomplished artist, there’s something for you at ASBA’s conference. You’ll be immersed in botanical art and leave with memories to inspire you for a long time to come. In addition to the three-day core conference, there are pre- and post-conference workshops providing in-depth study. The conference activities will be held at the Westin Hotel and the Denver Botanic Garden. Join us for dessert and wine at a Welcome and Small Works Opening Reception on Wednesday evening. Registration opens on July 12, 12:00 noon Eastern Time.

Pre- and Post- Conference Workshops
ASBA offers workshops with three exceptional artists in pre- and post-conference workshops. Two-day workshops preceding the conference (October 14-15) include Light Form & Reflected Lights – Gourds with Jean Emmons and Watercolor Roundup with Connie Sayas. Beverly Allen will conduct a three-day workshop on Working to the Third Dimension on October 19, 20, 21.

Welcoming & Small Works Opening Reception

On Wednesday evening, October 15, relax after your travel and kick off the conference . Join the Rocky Mountain Society of Botanical Artists, our local hosts, for a welcoming reception and opening of Botanical Art with Altitude: Small Works Exhibition. Dessert and wine will be served at 8 pm. Meet up with old friends and make new ones as we begin a full schedule of activities.

Classes, Lectures, Trips and More!

On Thursday, October 16, the popular Portfolio Sharing will be held in the spacious Westin Mezzanine. The Annual Meeting and Luncheon will catch you up on ASBA’s activities and will be followed by the Techniques Showcase featuring Hillary Parker (composition), Ann Swan (colored pencil), and Kelly Leahy Radding (gouache). Hands-on classes with Susan Fisher, and Carol Govan and lectures with Jesse Meyer of Pergamena, Katherine Taylor of Daniel Smith, Carol Woodin and Jeanne Debons fill the day. The Wildflower Forum Thursday evening will feature Rare Plants of Colorado with Susan Spackman Panjabi, a botanist with the Colorado Natural Heritage Program.

Friday and Saturday will include many hands-on classes, lectures, demonstrations and tours. Tours to the Plains Conservation Center, Denver Museum of Nature and Science, and the beautiful Denver Botanic Gardens with a special exhibition of Chihuly Glass Sculptures will educate and dazzle you!

The Silent Auction and Awards Banquet are great finales to the conference. Along with the auction, some of the donated items will be included in a Market Place format. No need to wait to be the winning bidder. Just purchase the items of your choice before someone else beats you to it!l

Please note that Denver’s altitude is 5,280 feet, one mile above sea level. While in Denver, drinking plenty of water is the number one way to adjust to the higher altitude. October temperatures average 37 to 65 degrees F.

Pre-Conference Workshop: Light, Form and Reflected Light - Gourds with Jean Emmons

NOTE: This is a 2-day workshop (Tuesday and Wednesday) - Session fee covers both days. After completing a series of watercolor exercises, we will tackle autumn gourds. Sculptural and durable, gourds offer us a perfect opportunity to study light on form. Each little wart and bump allows us a chance to study highlights, core darks, reflected light, cast shadows and form shadows.

Portfolio Sharing

Display your portfolio or view those of other ASBA artists. Share ideas and camaraderie. On a first-come basis, artists who sign up to display their work will be given table space as space permits. The Story of Vellum with Jesse Meyer

Since 1550 the Meyer family has been involved in tanning and leatherwork. Pergamena is recognized as North America's leading parchment and leathers producer. Join Jesse Meyer of Pergamena for a lecture about the making and use of different types of prepared skin vellum as a ground for watercolor. Vellum will be available for sale during the conference.

Wildflower Forum - Rare Plants of Colorado with Susan Spackman Panjabi

Rare Plants of Colorado Colorado supports about 500 globally and state rare plant species. Photos and artwork showing some of the rare species will be presented, as well as information about local conservation efforts. Susan Spackman Panjabi is a botanist with the Colorado Natural Heritage Program at Colorado State University. She has focused her research on the rare plants of Colorado for the past 20 years and is the principal author of the Colorado Rare Plant Guide.

Tour: Plains Conservation Center

Bus departs from Westin at 8:45 am. The Plains Conservation Center exists to bring the natural wonder of the prairie into the realm of personal experience by: PRESERVING a remnant of the eastern Colorado High Plains, EDUCATING the public about its natural and cultural heritage and NURTURING sound conservation and environmental ethics. The 1,000 acre natural area is home to pronghorn, prairie dogs, coyotes and prairie birds with 5 miles of trails for visitors to explore. Wells Crossing, the historic farm, harkens back to homesteading days of sod houses, one-room schools, heritage livestock and heirloom gardens. The Cheyenne Camp offers visitors a glimpse into the former semi-nomadic life of Plains Indians, including 4 stately tipis and their typical furnishings. A monochromatic rendering of artichokes focuses the viewer on the contour of the artichoke and highlights the interaction of form and light within different points in the painting. Botanical Art Education for Adults - What's Important?

Centering on a panel discussion, we will explore what should be the most important elements of any rigorous botanical art curriculum. Drawing from the wisdom of our speakers, each will give a short overview, and then, using pre- submitted questions and group discussion, build a guideline, useful for teachers of all experience levels. Our panel includes Derek Norman, Helen Allen and Susan Fisher, all of whom are experts in the botanical art education field. Derek, ASBA President, teaches at the Chicago Botanic Gardens. Susan has directed programs in Denver and Tucson and now teaches for many prestigious botanical art programs. Helen is Director of the Chelsea Physic Garden program in London and is Director of the Highgrove Florilegium. The moderator is Sarah Roche, ASBA Education Chair and Education Director of the Certificate Program at the Wellesley College Botanic Garden.

Grant Presentations with Jan Boyd Haring

Attend this interesting session to learn about these outstanding projects from the recipients themselves. Marsha Bennett’s project will fund a five minute video highlighting the Citizen Scientist project and members of the Southwest Society of Botanical Artists in the scientific identification and documentation of the flora of the Phoenix Mountains Preserve. Lisa Coddington’s project goal is to teach two botanical art workshops on the island of Grenada with a support partnership involving the Peak Institute. Estelle DeRidder’s project is to assist with the creation of multiple sets of reusable plant identification cards featuring illustrations of plant life cycle phases and focused on the top 35 native plant species of the Madrona Marsh Preserve in Torrance Ca. Jody William’s project is extending the reach of ASBA’s Following in the Bartram’s Footsteps exhibition to the St. Francois Mountains of Southeastern Missouri. The project will include drawing, painting and lecturing about the plants listed by the Bartrams and growing in the region.

Monotype Botanicals - Morning with Mark Lunning

Bus departs from the Westin at 8:30 am for Open Press Studio. Class runs from 9:00 am to 12:00 pm. Come prepared with two or three of your drawing ideas that you would like to see realized as a monotype. The finished print size will be 8 X 10 inches. There may be time for you to complete more than one print. Learn the basics about this unique process using a combination of painting and printmaking techniques to create your own one of a kind image. You will draw the botanical image of your choice on a flat plate using appropriate inks and then observe how that image is transferred to paper by passing it through a printing press. There will also be a wide variety of botanical prints on view, in the gallery at Open Press, Ltd. Return bus departs OPS at 12 noon, arriving at Westin at 12:30 pm. Box lunch at Westin.

Botanical Zentangle with Annie Reiser

Tour: Denver Botanic Garden - Chihuly Exhibit & DBG Instructor Demonstrations

Sketching with Quill and Ink with Susan DiMarchi

In this fast-paced guided sketching class, you will build confidence using this medium. Monotype Botanicals - Afternoon with Mark Lunning

Bus departs from Westin at 12:30 pm for Open Press Studio. Class runs from 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm. Come prepared to the Open Press, Ltd. Print studio with two or three of your drawing ideas that you would like to see realized as a monotype. The finished print size will be 8 X 10 inches. There may be time for you to complete more than one print. Learn the basics about this unique process using a combination of painting and printmaking techniques to create your own one of a kind image. You will draw the botanical image of your choice on a flat plate using appropriate inks and then observe how that image is transferred to paper by passing it through a printing press. There will also be a wide variety of botanical prints on view, in the gallery. Box lunch at Westin. Return bus departs Open Press at 4:15pm, arriving at the Westin at 4:30 pm.

The New England Society of Botanical Artists spent three years planning for a juried native plants exhibit and 18 months moving it to venues throughout the region. Beverly Allen

Beverly Allen has been a botanical artist for 19 years and teaching for 13 years. Her work is held in the Shirley Sherwood Collection, the Highgrove Florilegium, the RHS Lindley Library, Royal Botanic Gardens Library Kew, the Isaac and Alisa Sutton Collection, and the Royal Botanic Gardens, Sydney. She holds gold medals from the RHS and the NYBG and the ASBA Diane Bouchier Artist Award for Excellence in Botanical Art in 2016.

Jan Boyd Haring

Jan Boyd Haring completed the Denver Botanic Gardens Botanical Art and Illustration Program in 2006. She received her BFA from the University of Northern Arizona and is now enrolled in the Horticulture Program at the Denver Botanic Gardens.

Lugene Bruno

Hunt Institute Curator of Art Lugene Bruno oversees the research of, access to, and exhibitions selected from a collection of over 31,000 botanical artworks. She offers talks on site and at conferences. She also is a practicing artist working in the mediums of photography and drawing.

Jeanne Debons

Jeanne Debons received a Diploma of Botanical Illustration from the English Gardening School, a MS and PhD in Botany and Plant Pathology. She teaches classes in Botanical Illustration and has participated in exhibitions internationally. Her work has been published and has appeared on the covers of books.

Susan DiMarchi

Susan is a visual artist with a diverse background in painting, commercial art, glass design, botanical illustration and plant landscapes. Her work has been exhibited in galleries, book publications, and private collections. Susan teaches Graphite, Colored Pencil and Pen/Ink at the School of Botanical Art and Illustration in Denver.

Jean Emmons

An avid gardener, Emmons has won two Gold Medals and "Best Painting of Show" from the Royal Horticultural Society, London. Also, the ASBA Founders Award for Excellence in Botanical Art. Recent awards include the Jurors' Award at the 20th Botanical Art Exhibition at Filoli and "Best in Show" at the ASBA's 21st International. Recent books featuring her work include Plant: The Art and Science of Botany by Phaidon Press, RHS Botanical Illustration, The Gold Medal Winners by Charlotte Brooks, The Shirley Sherwood Collection, Modern Masterpieces of Botanical Art by Shirley Sherwood.

Olga Eysymontt

Since 1997, Olga Eysymontt has taught botanical illustration classes for the Los Angeles County Arboretum and Botanic Garden. She is a former instructor at Otis College of Art, and a Fine Arts graduate of Rochester Institute of Technology. Olga is passionate about teaching and the thrill of bringing out each student’s vision. Aside from botanical illustration, her current interests include landscape and macro photography.

Susan T. Fisher

Susan T. Fisher is the former Coordinator for the Botanical Program at Denver Botanic Gardens, the former Director of the Art Institute at the Desert Museum in Tucson,AZ and a former President of the ASBA. She has been consulting and teaching botanical art related classes since 1998.

Marilyn Garber

Marilyn Garber is a botanical artist, educator and founder of the Minnesota School of Botanical Art in Minneapolis (2001). She is a member of the American Society of Botanical Artists, serving as its President from 2007-2009. Her paintings have been included in exhibitions from the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew to the Queen Sirikit Botanical Garden, Thailand.

Carol Govan

Carol Govan teaches many art and botany courses at the Wellesley College Botanic Gardens and the New England Wild Flower Society, where she helps students explore the connection between art and science and develop the observational and drawing skills needed for both.

Mervi Hjelmroos-Koski

Mervi is a botanist with a PhD in quaternary biology and D.Sc in palynology. She has been the Manager of the Denver Botanic Gardens' School of Botanical Art and Illustration since 2007. Mervi teaches Botany, Microscopic techniques and Bookbinding.

Jayme Irvin

Jayme S. Irvin has had the good fortune to work at the Denver Museum of Nature and Science creating exhibits and working on Diorama restoration. Her studio features flora and fauna paintings, botanic illustrations, and habitat creations for museums, visitor centers and private collections.

Sally Jacobs

A Los Angeles-based artist, Sally Jacobs has taught botanical illustration at Otis College of Art, the Los Angeles Arboretum, and the Getty Center. Her work has been selected for many ASBA sponsored juried shows. She shows her paintings regularly at the TAG Gallery at the Bergamot Art Center in Santa Monica, California.

Robin Jess

Robin Jess is the former Executive Director of ASBA. She is fluent in graphite, watercolor, pen and ink, and etching and is the Coordinator of The New York Botanical Garden’s Botanical Art and Illustration Program.

Renee Jorgenson

Renee is a Colorado native and nature enthusiast, instructor, and freelance artist. Her interests’ in the natural world afford her a variety of commission in botanical art, modern illumination and calligraphy. Renee is currently an instructor for the School of Botanical Art and Illustration in Denver, Colorado.

Martha Kemp

Martha Kemp is a self-taught artist who specializes in using graphite pencil for detailed botanical drawings. She is the recipient of the ASBA Bouchier Award (1999), five Royal Horticultural Society Gold Medals and two “Best Drawing in Show” awards at the ASBA/HSNY Annual Exhibitions.

Libby Kyer

Libby creates artworks reflecting her love of realism, believing humans are hardwired to create order from chaos. Her works are in numerous art and science publications including her volume Today’s Botanical Artists, and in private, corporate and museum collections. She delights in teaching botanical art.

Kelly Leahy Radding

Kelly Leahy Radding is a painter of contemporary naturalism. She delves into the natural world to find her subjects and explores alternate mediums, such as egg tempera, to tell their unique stories.

Marjorie Leggitt

Marjorie Leggitt, a professional scientific illustrator, uses traditional and digital techniques to produce illustrations for professional research, trade, and textbook publications, and museum exhibits. A member of GNSI since 1979 and ASBA since 2000, she has taught at the Denver Botanic Gardens School of Botanical Art and Illustration since 1990.

Mark Lunning

Mark Lunning is the owner of Open Press, Ltd. He is a master printmaker, who has been assisting hundreds of artist printmakers from across the country for over 25 years. Fine art prints are created with pigment, dye, or ink applied by, on, or through one or more plates.

Lee McCaffree and Vicki Underland-Rosow

Vicki Underland-Rosow and Lee McCaffree traveled with Dianne Aigaki in Tibet painting flowers on the highest plateau in the world while becoming part of Companions In Compassion, non-profit providing educational scholarships for Tibetan children and food for starving political prisoners in Tibet.

Joan McGann

Joan McGann received her BFA from Wichita State University and a Certificate of Excellence from the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum Art Institute, Nature Illustration Program. Her works in botanical illustration have an emphasis on desert plants. Joan works in pen and ink and watercolor, as well as graphite and colored pencil.

Jesse Meyer

Jesse Meyer comes from a family that has been involved in the animal hide and tanning industry for 500 years. He has been making parchment and vellum since graduating from college and constantly working on improving and understanding the product and process. He is current president of, and helps to run, Pergamena Parchments & Leathers in the Hudson Valley, NY area.

Susan Spackman Panjabi

Susan Spackman Panjabi is a Botanist with the Colorado Natural Heritage Program at Colorado State University. She has focused her research on the rare plants of Colorado for the past 20 years and is the principal author of the Colorado Rare Plant Guide.

Hillary Parker

Hillary Parker is a naturalist and international award winning botanical watercolor artist with paintings exhibited and sold worldwide. With a dual career of teaching and painting for over 25 years, she paints for private and public commissions, juried exhibitions, and presents international workshops, lectures and private art instruction.

John Pastoriza-Piñol

John is a contemporary artist based in Melbourne, Australia and very much a neo-conservative rebel as his practice departs from the precise discipline of Naturalism and continues to investigate not just pure dichotomies such as man and nature, science and art, but their complex and dynamic interrelationships.

Annie Reiser

Annie Reiser teaches part-time at the Denver Botanic Gardens School of Botanical Art and Illustration, and is a certified Zentangle® teacher doing business as Botangle© . A teacher by trade with an M.A. in German, she is now a full-time writer/editor for NOAA in Boulder.

Betsy Rogers-Knox

Betsy earned a Certificate in Botanical Illustration from The NYBG and is enchanted by the full lifecycle of plants and their habitats. Her work has been shown widely in the US including the 13th-21st ASBA International Exhibitions, the NYBG Triennial , Out of the Woods, and the RHS Botanical Art Exhibit in London in 2016 and 2018 where she received the Judges Special Award for the educational and ecological value of the work. Her work is held in the collection at the RHS Lindley Library in London.

Susan Rubin

Botanical artist Susan Rubin loves colored pencils. Working and teaching in the medium since 1995 at Denver Botanic Gardens, online and in workshops in the US and abroad, she developed an acclaimed method for mixing color in colored pencil. A frequent gallery exhibitor, her colored pencil botanicals, primarily on Mylar since 2000, have evolved into adventurous commentary on the botanical realm. A RHS group Gold Medalist in 2017, Susan's works on Mylar are also held in the collections at the Hunt Institute and the New York State Museum.

Connie Sayas

Coloradoan, Constance Sayas has a degree in Fine Art and a career in science. Former exhibition designer for several museums, then scientific illustrator for Encyclopaedia Britannica, she currently teaches illustration at Denver Botanic Gardens. Her award-winning watercolors are in numerous collections including the Hunt Institute.

Ann Swan

Ann champions the colored pencil and loves the flexibility and colour brilliance that can be achieved with quality pencils and is constantly experimenting to develop new techniques and approaches towards creating vibrant, contemporary plant portraits in this media. Ann has been working in graphite and colored pencil for over thirty years and is an enthusiastic and nurturing teacher, nowadays mainly on Zoom, and her book ‘Botanical Painting with Colour Pencils’ (‘Plant Portraits in Colored Pencil’ in the US) has been a leader in the field for over 10 years. She has been awarded 4 RHS Gold Medals and her work is in the prestigious Shirley Sherwood Collection and the RHS Lindley Library.

Denise Walser-Kolar

Denise began her journey into botanical art in 2003, after receiving a botanical art class from her parents as a birthday gift. She received the Diane Bouchier Artist Award for Excellence in Botanical Art in 2015, and received a Silver-Gilt medal from the Royal Horticultural Society in 2011. Her work is held in the permanent collection of the Hunt Institute for Botanical Documentation. Denise teaches vellum workshops across the country.

Catherine Watters

Catherine has been teaching since 1999, venues include ASBA conferences and chapters, UC Berkeley Botanical Garden, Wellesley College, and France. She was an instructor and curriculum developer for the Filoli Botanical Art Certificate Program for 20 years. Joyce Westner has a Botanical Art certificate from the Friends of Wellesley College Botanic Gardens and writes The Botanical Artist “Conversation with Our Artists” interviews. With Kay Kopper and Kelly Radding, she organized and coordinated their “From the Mountains to the Sea” exhibit.

Carol Woodin

Carol Woodin enjoys spending time out in the gardens, fields and forests looking at and making studies of plants for future paintings. Her paintings in watercolor on vellum have been collected and exhibited around the world. She has taught botanical watercolor for over 25 years, and is co-editor of the ‘new standard’ botanical art instruction book Botanical Art Techniques, A Comprehensive Guide, published by ASBA and Timber Press. She received a Gold Medal from the Royal Horticultural Society in 1995, the 1998 ASBA Diane Bouchier Artist Award, the 2016 Orchid Digest Medal of Honor.

Conference fees are for current ASBA members. You must be a current ASBA member prior to registering for the conference. Several meals are included in the conference fee including lunches on Thursday, Friday and Saturday, and the Saturday evening banquet. Light refreshments will be served at the Welcome and Small Works Reception on Wednesday and Thursday’s Wildflower Forum. Many activities are free including: Portfolio Sharing, The Story of Vellum, lectures on teaching botanical art, The Story of Pigments, Juror Training, Wildflower Forum, Grant Recipient Presentations, Beyond Accuracy presentation, Transforming Lives through Botanical Art, and How to Organize a Chapter Exhibition.

Two ways to register: online or by mail. Online registration is the best way for you to get the classes you want. Mail-in registrations will be processes when received, not based on postmark date. Mail-ins postmarked prior to opening day of registration (July 12) will not be processed.

1. To register online and pay with a credit card (MC/Visa): go to www.asba-art.org/conference/2014 and click on the "Registration" tab. Nearly 100% of registrants used the registration website last year.

2. To register by mail: clip, copy or download and print the registration form. Complete form and mail along with your check payable to ASBA to ASBA 20th Annual Meeting, 2900 Southern Blvd., Bronx, NY 10458-5126.

1. Current ASBA membership is required for registration.

2. The ASBA Annual Meeting and Conference is a three-day event. Partial registration is not available. Preference is given to conference registrants for pre- and post-conference workshops and activities.

3. Registration Fees:

On or before August 8, 2014: $360 for current members
On or after August 9, 2014: $390 for current members

4. Registration Deadline: Registration is closed as of September 12, 2014.

No registrations are accepted after this time.

5. Refund and Cancellation Policy:

- Cancellation on or before August 8, 2014 - $75 fee. All workshop fees refunded.
- Cancellation after August 9 through September 1, 2014 - $150 fee plus 20% of workshop fees
- Cancellation after September 1 through September 12, 2014 - $200 fee plus 50% of workshop fees
- Cancellation Pre-and Post-conference Workshops on or before August 15 – 50% fee
- Pre- and Post-conference Workshop cancellation after August 15 – no refund.
- No refunds of registration fee or workshops dropped after September 12.
- Health emergency or death in the immediate family: Refunds will be same as above except cancellation on or after October 1 through October 10, $200 of the basic registration fee and 50% of all other fees will be refunded to the registrant.
- If a guest cancels due to health emergency or death in the immediate family on or after October 1, 75% of guest meal fees and 50% of any other fees will be refunded.
- ASBA reserves the right to cancel any workshop that does not meet a minimum registration and to replace an instructor in the event that an instructor is unable to fulfill their obligation to teach.
