Six Pears in Conversation
Pyrus communis
I came upon a box of pears for sale in the produce section of Costco, and immediately I saw them as subjects for a botanical. Each pear had a unique shape and seemed to have a “personality” of its own that I wanted to recreate in a painting. In a lineup, the pears seemed to interact with their partners, so the title, “Six Pears in Conversation,” was inevitable.
I work in oils on gessoed paper. This is a time-honored substrate, as a substitute for canvas on a stretcher.
I have painted more than sixty botanicals over the years, so it is not always easy to find a new subject, especially in my new home in Maryland. I miss the New York Union Square Greenmarket, Wave Hill, and The New York Botanical Garden.
