Calls for Entries

We post Calls for Entries for Northern California exhibition opportunities which may be of interest to our members. For shows outside this area, you may want to check the ASBA site as well as other groups listed on our Links page.
Each exhibit has its own specific guidelines and requirements, but for general information about framing standards for NCalSBA members’ exhibitions please check here.

To research whether a plant is a native of California, you may want to use the Jepson Online Interchange California Floristics or the Calflora Search for Plants. If you are specifically seeking California natives, be sure to check that the plant is not listed as “naturalized in CA”.

Plants Illustrated 2025: Partners in Pollination

Botanical Art Exhibition by NCalSBA Members
UC Botanical Garden at Berkeley
January 22 - February 3, 2025

Deadline for Entries December 1, 2024

The Northern California Society of Botanical Artists (NCalSBA) will hold its 16th annual exhibition at UC Botanical Garden at Berkeley from around January 22 to February 3, 2025. We are delighted to be able to hold this exhibition in the Julia Morgan Hall once again.

The theme for this year is about Pollination highlighting the relationship between flowering plants and their pollinators. Pollination is a mutually beneficial interaction involving nearly 170,000 plant and 200,000 animal species. Many plants can’t reproduce without pollen carried to them by foraging pollinators. Top pollinators include: bees, wasps, butterflies, moths, beetles, flies, hummingbirds, and bats! These pollinators help carry pollen from the male part of the flower (stamen) to the female part of the same or another flower (stigma). The movement of pollen must take place for the plant to become fertilized and produce fruits, seeds, and young plants.

Depicting a pollinator in your artwork is optional. We ask for a description of a pollinator relationship to go with the artwork label. This gives you the broad area of flowering plants to consider. It doesn't have to have a 'special' pollinator relationship; a wildflower, for instance, might be visited by many "generalist" pollinators.

Please review our new Guidelines for Exhibitions - check here.  Any artwork not conforming to these guidelines will not be accepted.  Gallery sitting is required for members to participate.  A donation of $50 will be requested for those who absolutely cannot gallery sit.  Originals are sold with a 30% commission to benefit the Garden.  Any sales shall be arranged directly with the artist.

Entries cannot be in the UC Florilegium nor have been in a previous Plants Illustrated exhibition.

If you have questions, contact the Exhibitions Committee: Catherine Watters, Laura Sawczuk, Kaye Herbranson, and Sally Petru.
