Cardoon
Cynara cardunculus
Cynara cardunculus var. altilis derives from the wild Mediterranean native C. c. var. sylvestris, ancestor to both artichokes and cardoons in our gardens. Rumor has it that the cardoon was domesticated by Arabs in the western Mediterranean during the Middle Ages, and cardoons appear in still life paintings by Carravagio and Sanchez Coran in the 17th century. The subject of this picture was grown from seed from Select Seeds, of Union CT, in 2022 and continues to thrive in my Zone 7 garden in Delaware.
