Māmaki
Pipturus albidus
Pipturus albidus is a native species in Hawai’i and is found on all the major islands in moist forests. Mamaki, as it is known in Hawai’i, grows from low elevations up to about 6,000 feet. It plays important roles ecologically and culturally. It thrives in disturbed areas and is fast growing into a large shrub/small tree; thus, it has become an important species in forest restoration projects. With its early colonization of disturbed areas, it creates favorable habitat for other native species to establish. It also plays a role in the lifecycle of the Kamehameha butterfly, Vanessa tameamea; it is a host plant for the caterpillar, and the clusters of tiny flowers provide nectar for the adult butterfly. The Kamehameha butterfly, one of only two butterflies native to Hawai’i, is considered vulnerable as habitat loss has taken a toll on populations, and the continued presence of mamaki in native forests is critical to the butterfly’s long-term survival.
Mamaki leaves are used by people as well as caterpillars. It is thought to support heart health and the immune system, and to reduce fatigue. The leaves are steeped to make a tea containing antioxidants. I did try making the tea and it has a slightly earthy, nutty flavor, although I think I need more practice to brew the perfect cup! The fruit also has medicinal uses, as a topical antibacterial and antifungal treatment. The bark fibers were used to make rope and kapa cloth.
Although I do not live in Hawai’i, I have a passionate interest in the Hawaiian flora that began when I worked at a botanical garden on Kauai several decades ago! I have been fortunate to work in botanical gardens and universities that have Hawaiian plant collections, which allows me to be able to observe and draw living specimens as well as participate in their conservation. I was attracted to this species mostly because it is a stunning little tree. The leaf venation creates a beautiful pattern and texture and is what initially caught my eye. It’s also an unusual plant: it is a member of the Urticaceae or nettle family, however due to its evolution in the absence of large herbivores it has no defensive stinging hairs. As a woody species it is also very different from the herbaceous nettles I was accustomed to seeing while growing up in the Northeast United States. I find the tiny male and female flowers beautiful when observed under a microscope.
I began my career in botanical art as a scientific illustrator, so recording the diagnostic characteristics and details that make a species unique is a way I can learn about the plants and it also showcases for people who view my work what makes a plant special. Pen and ink is the typical medium for scientific illustration, but I think it is also a subtle and elegant art form. My hope is that my illustration will invite viewers to step in and look closely at the details that define this species and be inspired to learn more about it.
