Graphite techniques used on paper work well on vellum, too—with both advantages and challenges. Lifting and corrections can be easier on vellum, and graphite can be moved around with a damp brush. Watercolor under color can be used to create exciting graphite textures, while water-soluble graphite opens new ranges of detail and broad tonal values. In this tutorial Deborah Shaw shows how to prepare and use a variety of pencils, erasers, brushes, and other tools to create interesting textures and effects. Incising tools can help create veins, lines, and ridges and watercolor can be added at any time during the process. Deborah will demonstrate how she achieves a full range of tones and fine tunes the final drawing. Deborah Shaw Materials List
