Alana Van Rensselaer paints botanical watercolors and watercolor commissions from live plant material. She developed a love of gardening and nature from her mother and a passion for art and creativity from her father, Al Hartley, cartoonist of Archie Comics. Her artistic style flows from her understanding of botany and her appreciation for the transparency of her medium.
Alana’s passion has given her a zest for learning. She studied at the International Studio of Chinese Art in Hong Kong where she learned the graceful technique of single-stroke watercolor. In addition, she completed the certificate program in Ikebana at the Sogetsu School. She is the founder of the Brookside Art Guild and co-founder of the Academy for Natural Arts where she gave watercolor workshops and enriched the lives of hundreds of residents by bringing world-class art instruction to New Jersey. In June she will receive her Certificate in Botanical Art and Illustration from the New York Botanical Garden.
Alana is a member of the American Society of Botanical Artists, the Botanical Art Society of New Jersey, Delaware and Pennsylvania, the IASG, the NY Botanical Garden, the Frelinghuysen Arboretum, and the Somerset Art Association. Her work has been exhibited at Pfizer’s Corporate Center, the India Fine Arts Society in New Delhi, the Madison Gallery at Morristown Memorial Hospital, Fiddlers Elbow Country Club, and Clinton Falls Gallery. She has received many awards in juried shows. Her donations of botanical art have raised thousands of dollars for cancer research and charitable organizations.
