The TSBA circle is thrilled to be hosting the first post-pandemic in-person conference in the beautiful state of New York! Come immerse yourself in Botanical Instruction for all levels and reconnect with friends from near and far in all that the Metropolitan area has to offer. This year’s conference will have opportunities to visit the world-renowned New York Botanical Garden in all its fall splendor as well as the gardens of Untermeyer with its spectacular views of the Hudson River and Wave Hill where the ASBA Annual exhibition will be held this year. Considering the time of year, what a great place to be to enjoy the Halloween favorites of Sleepy Hollow and the Great Pumpkin Blaze. The area lays claim to many historic sights such as Lyndhurst Mansion, Washington Irving's Sunnyside as well as Kykuit, the John D, Rockefeller Estate and Philipsburg Manor.

For our members unable to travel, we are creating an Online in October track – a scaled-back option, not as full as the last two years when “online” was THE conference – but still an opportunity to connect and be part of the conference experience. More details on that as plans develop.

Health and Safety at the Conference
You can plan on attending the conference with confidence that health and safety policies have been put in place and procedures will be rigorously followed to create the safest conference experience possible.
When contracting with the conference hotel – the Marriott Westchester – hotel policies and procedures were carefully considered. In December, the ASBA Executive Committee of the Board of Directors adopted the following policy as we began to recruit instructors:
ASBA will follow all local guidelines as well as CDC recommendations in place at the time of the October, 2022 conference. All conference attendees will be required to be vaccinated (in accordance with CDC guidelines) and to produce proof of vaccination.

Martin Allen
Martin has been teaching and lecturing for over ten years, in watercolour, and mainly by discussing options for students to improve their work however they wish to do so. He is an RHS Gold Medallist, Emeritus Fellow of the Chelsea Physic Garden Florilegium Society, and trustee of the Association of Botanical Artists with paintings in the collection of the Hunt Institute and the Shirley Sherwood Collection. He works in UK native plant conservation, has a degree in Environmental Horticulture, and is currently writing a book about England's Ancient Grasslands.
Margaret Best
An art educator most of her life, Margaret Best has been dedicated to the practice and teaching of botanical art in graphite, coloured pencil and watercolour for the past twenty years in over ten countries. Margaret is well known for her extensive knowledge of colour and her excellent handout material for both in-person and online teaching. Most of her own artwork now reflects plant life in her home setting in Nova Scotia, Canada. She has also enjoyed painting a diverse range of plant subjects related to teaching travels to her home country South Africa also Bermuda, Italy and UK. Margaret’s work has been featured in numerous ASBA juried international exhibitions and is included in the Hunt Institute, RBG Sydney Florilegium and many private collections around the globe. To date, over 20 of her coin designs of Canadian flora have been selected by the Royal Canadian Mint. Margaret has authored numerous e-booklets on topics of technique and colour that have been well received by botanical artists in over 30 countries.
Bobbi Angell
Bobbi Angell - scientific illustrator, printmaker, instructor, and gardener - has been drawing plants for botanists around the world since 1978. Much of her work is done from herbarium specimens at The New York Botanical Garden, but tropical field work and growing plants at her home in Vermont contribute to her diverse knowledge of plants. She is co-author of A Botanist’s Vocabulary, and her illustrations have been published in floras including Guide to the Vascular Plants of Central French Guiana, Vines and Climbing Plants of Puerto Rico, and Intermountain Flora.
Mary Dillon
Mary Dillon is an award winning Irish botanical artist. Her work belongs in the collection of the Hunt Institute of Botanical Art and Documentation in Pittsburgh and The Dr. Shirley Sherwood Collection in The Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew. The National Gallery of Ireland chose Mary's work as the signature image for their exhibition, 'Drawn From Nature'. Along with exhibiting and teaching botanical art in Ireland Mary also enjoys opportunities to teach in Greece, Spain, the UK and the US. Mary finds teaching botanical art the perfect opportunity to bring together her three passions of painting, plants and working with people.
Shevaun Doherty
Shevaun Doherty is an Irish botanical and natural history artist painting in watercolour on paper and vellum. She is the current President of the Society of Botanical Artists. An award-winning artist, she regularly exhibits in Ireland and internationally. In 2020 her painting of Golden-eye lichen was exhibited at the National Gallery Ireland. She designs Flora and Fauna National postage stamps for An Post, recently completing her third set. Her bumblebee painting is the cover image for the All-Ireland Pollinator Plan. She considers herself a visual storyteller, using her skills as botanical artist to raise awareness about endangered species and habitat loss.
JEAN EMMONS
An avid gardener, Emmons has won two Gold Medals and "Best Painting of Show" from the Royal Horticultural Society, London. Also, the ASBA Founders Award for Excellence in Botanical Art. Recent awards include the Jurors' Award at the 20th Botanical Art Exhibition at Filoli and "Best in Show" at the ASBA's 21st International. Recent books featuring her work include Plant: The Art and Science of Botany by Phaidon Press, RHS Botanical Illustration, The Gold Medal Winners by Charlotte Brooks, The Shirley Sherwood Collection, Modern Masterpieces of Botanical Art by Shirley Sherwood, The American Society of Botanical Artists, Botanical Art Techniques edited by Carol Woodin and Robin Jess.
Lara Call Gastinger
Lara Call Gastinger is an artist and botanical illustrator from Charlottesville, Virginia and was the chief illustrator of the Flora of Virginia, a botanical reference. She has her undergraduate degree in Biology from the University of Virginia and a master's degree in plant ecology from Virginia Tech. She has been awarded two gold medals (2007, 2018) at the Royal Horticultural Society Botanical Art shows in London and her work is in the Hunt Institute for Botanical Documentation. Her artwork appears in the latest Peterson's Field Guide to Mushrooms and ASBA's Botanical Art Techniques Handbook.
Wendy Hollender
Wendy Hollender is a botanical artist, author, and instructor. She leads workshops around the world, has illustrated for many publications, and exhibits extensively. Her award winning newest book is "The Joy of Botanical Drawing." Her hands on down to earth (no pun intended) teaching style focusing on the connection between the live botanical subject and the close observation and drawing of it. Her biggest fault is that she makes it look so easy to do, in part because she is having so much fun! Teaching on Zoom is second nature to Wendy as her favorite thing to do is to draw and share her techniques for everyone to learn from. Her enthusiasm is contagious.
Vincent Jeannerot
Vincent Jeannerot was born in Lyon in France and studied at the National School of Fine Arts of Lyon. He is member of “La Maison des Artistes”, the American Society of Botanical Artists (ASBA), the French Society of Botanical Illustration (SFIB), and the Society of French Watercolor (SFA). He has exhibited in Paris, London, Melbourne and Moscow and he runs international workshops in USA, Australia, New Zealand, Brazil, Italy, Russia, and Japan. He published several books and exhibits in his own permanent gallery in Lyon.
Robin Jess
Robin Jess is the former Executive Director of ASBA. She is fluent in graphite, watercolor, pen and ink, and etching and is the Coordinator of The New York Botanical Garden’s Botanical Art and Illustration Program.
Heeyoung Kim
Known as a wildflower painter, Heeyoung Kim documents native plants of prairies and woodlands of Midwestern USA. Her works are identifiable by the precise depiction of the botanical aspects of the plant species in unique compositions. She won RHS gold medal, Best in Show of HSNY/ASBA, and Diane Bouchier Artist Award for Excellence in Botanical Art by ASBA, among others. Her works are in various collections including Transylvania Florilegium. Kim founded Heeyoung Kim Botanical Art Academy at Brushwood Center, Riverwoods, IL., and teaches the traditional art form in watercolor, crow quill pen and ink, and graphite pencil with the focus on the serious/professional development of individual student’s projects by providing in-depth instructions and feedback with continuation.
Sarah Morrish
Sarah has been teaching botanical and natural history art for over 15 years using a variety of media, independently and for a variety of organisations including Wellesley College Botanic Gardens, RBG Edinburgh, Irish Society of Botanical Artists and also conservation organisations. Much of her teaching focuses on the importance of drawing alongside thorough observation and investigation of your subject matter, all of which she views as an essential foundation. to our working practice as botanical artists. She is a fellow of the Linnean Society and a painting member of the Chelsea Physic Garden Florilegium. Her work has been exhibited in the UK and abroad, and she has undertaken commissions for the Natural History Museum in London and Curtis's Botanical Magazine. Sarah is the author of ‘Natural History Illustration in Pen and Ink’ a popular book used by artists and illustrators across the world.
Irina Neacsu
Irina Neacsu is a former architect, specialised in botanical art. She runs her own practice in Transylvania, Romania, and her work includes botanical painting, illustration and design, teaching and curatorial work. While her team carries the Cembra Botanical Art and Design School project, her focus is on stretching the boundaries of botanical art while investigating contemporary approaces. Her personal interests evolve around cultural landscape and wild flora of Transylvania and the Carpathians.
Margareta Pertl
Margareta has been teaching botanical illustration for 15 years, mainly in the botanical garden of the University of Vienna, Austria. Her main focus is on guiding students to learn to “see”, to observe details and to translate this onto paper in their individual way. Since 1997, Margareta has worked on botanical illustrations, focusing mainly on tropical orchids. Her preferred medium is watercolour combined with pencil. She illustrates plants as an entity, including roots or bulbs, new and old growth and dissections.<br> Margareta’s watercolours and ink drawings have been awarded by the Royal Horticultural Society and can be found in private and public collections, including the Hunt Institute. She has twice participated in botanical expeditions to Madagascar to illustrate native species like Cynorkis, published in the Curtis’s Botanical Magazine.<br> Margareta is currently a Research Fellow of the Botanical Garden, University of Vienna. Lynne Railsback
Lynne’s watercolors typically consist of subtle neutral tones. Using a “lift-out” technique and five pigment palette she’s able to capture the fine details in nature whether the specimen is neutral or colorful. Also important are her materials. Check out her web site for more information.
Dick Rauh
Dick Rauh came to botanical art late in life, but has made the most of it. After retirement he received a Ph.D. in Plant Sciences in 2001 from CUNY. .He received a Gold Medal from the Royal Horticultural Society in 2006. He has been teaching the science behind botanical art, as well as art classes at The New York Botanical Garden for over 25 years and gives workshops throughout the country. During the pandemic he has continued to teach on line. He has shown widely and had a solo show at the Brooklyn Botanical Garden in 2014.His artwork is in the collection of the New York State Museum, the Shirley Sherwood Collection, the Lindley Library in London and the Hunt Collection in Pittsburgh.
Monica Ray
Monica Ray, artist/instructor, earned a certificate in Botanical Art and Illustration from the NY Botanical Garden. She conducts art classes and workshops related to botanicals and natural science subjects since 2015, at multiple locations on Long Island, NY. She is a purist who craves color but at the same time loves the juxtaposition of the bold and delicate elements in a black and white rendering. She has exhibited solo and in groups nationally and internationally and her work is held in private collections in the US, Canada, Europe, and India. Monica is currently a member of the Board of Directors of ASBA.
Betsy Rogers-Knox
Betsy earned a Certificate in Botanical Illustration from The NYBG and is enchanted by the full lifecycle of plants and their habitats. Her work has been shown widely in the US including the 13th-21st ASBA International Exhibitions, the NYBG Triennial , Out of the Woods, and the RHS Botanical Art Exhibit in London in 2016 and 2018 where she received the Judges Special Award for the educational and ecological value of the work. Her work is held in the collection at the RHS Lindley Library in London.
Elaine Searle
Elaine works on paper and vellum, finding inspiration in a very wide range of subjects. Her artworks are known for their impact, depth and layered composition. Elaine’s work has been selected for inclusion in Prince of Wales’s Highgrove Florilegium and Transylvania Florilegium. She has works in the collections of The Hunt Institute and The Huntington Library and her work has been purchased by many private collectors. In Spring 2022 she was awarded a Botanical Art Residency at The Oak Spring Garden Foundation. Over 15 years teaching botanical art with a passion from beginners to masterclass level. Offering Zoom tuition, holiday courses in Europe, mentoring and workshops, Elaine has also been a guest tutor (virtual and in-person) for many botanical organisations. Deborah Shaw
Deborah Shaw has a degree in fine art as well as studying botany, native California flora and scientific illustration. Ms. Shaw is a member of ASBA, two ASBA chapters, and the Guild of Natural Science Illustrators. She teaches botanical art, and taught illustration, design and information design at UC Irvine Extension, where she was recipient of the "Distinguished Instructor" award. Deborah's work is in the permanent collection at the Hunt and in private collections. Her preferred media include graphite, watercolor, colored pencil, scratchboard, Illustrator and Photoshop.
Crystal Shin
Crystal Soojeong Shin Korean-born, Crystal is a botanical artist and scientific illustrator. Pursuing botanical art since her move to Seattle in 2013, she quickly blossomed as a botanical artist. She was the primary illustrator of the 2nd edition of “Flora of the Pacific Northwest” for the University of Washington Herbarium, generating 882 botanical illustrations in 3 years. Crystal is an established teacher of botanical drawing with colored pencils. Crystal has taught numerous art classes for groups that include Gage Academy of Art, Washington Native Plant Society, Bellevue Botanic Gardens, Amazon, and Pacific NW Botanical Artists. Crystal is drawn to capturing the luminous colors and intricate details of natural subjects. As an instructor, she offers her intuitive understanding of color and her ability to broaden her student’s insight, while endeavoring to offer effective examples and solutions to their questions.
Julia Trickey
Julia Trickey is a UK-based botanical artist with over 20 years teaching experience. She particularly enjoys painting fading flowers and leaf portraits in watercolor, often depicting them larger than life. She has received many awards for her work and has work in the Hunt Institute of Botanical Documentation, the RHS Lindley Library and the Shirley Sherwood Collection. Julia has taught all round the world both in person and online and since early 2021 she has been hosting fellow botanical artists as they share their passions, projects and botanical art processes. These online talks now attract a worldwide audience.
Catherine Watters
Catherine has been teaching since 1999, venues include ASBA conferences and chapters, UC Berkeley Botanical Garden, Wellesley College, and France. She was an instructor and curriculum developer for the Filoli Botanical Art Certificate Program for 20 years. Her teaching style is best summarized in this testimonial: “I enjoyed your gentle enthusiasm and kind attention, giving me such inspiration to pursue this precise art form” Catherine’s paintings are held in several collections including The Hunt Institute, Kew Gardens, The Paris Museum of Natural History. Elizabeth White-Pultz
Elizabeth White-Pultz has been a professional calligrapher for over 3 decades. Working with both corporate and private clients, her practice has encompassed a wide range of projects from events, to one-of-a-kind scrolls and testimonials. Botanical subjects have been frequent elements in her work. Volunteering at The New York Botanical Garden LuEsther T. Mertz Library Conservation Lab, she also studies in the NYBG Botanical Illustration program. She has taught both calligraphy and botanical drawing at 92nd Street Y in New York City since 2013. Elizabeth received her BFA in painting and drawing from Hunter College CUNY.
Esmée Winkel
Esmée Winkel is a scientific illustrator at Naturalis Biodiversity Center and paints extraordinary plants at the Hortus botanicus Leiden as well. Her work has received among others the Linnean Society of London Jill Smythies award, RHS Gold medals 2013, 2016, 2018, and the ASBA Botanical Illustrator Award.
Carol Woodin
Carol Woodin enjoys spending time out in the gardens, fields and forests looking at and making studies of plants for future paintings. Her paintings in watercolor on vellum have been collected and exhibited around the world. She has taught botanical watercolor for over 25 years, and is co-editor of the ‘new standard’ botanical art instruction book Botanical Art Techniques, A Comprehensive Guide, published by ASBA and Timber Press. She received a Gold Medal from the Royal Horticultural Society in 1995, the 1998 ASBA Diane Bouchier Artist Award, the 2016 Orchid Digest Medal of Honor.
