“The City of Mobile sits in the middle of the biologically richest part of North America.”
– E.O. Wilson

Join us for ASBA’s 29th Annual Meeting & Conference in Mobile, Alabama, October 11-14, 2023.

The Coastal Alabama Botanical Artists Circle invites you to head down South next fall and discover “America’s Amazon”.

Explore the magnificent Mobile Botanical Gardens.  You will find early blooming Camellia sasanqua in the K. Sawada Winter Garden and a variety of native wildflowers in the Longleaf Pine Conservation Forest. October is prime migration time in Mobile, so be on the lookout for butterflies and hummers in the Pollinator Garden.

Mark your calendars and make your plans for a unique ASBA experience in Mobile, Alabama in 2023!

The 2023 Mobile conference will be an in-person event making the most of “the Delta experience.” The 2023 conference  design was created for the 2020 conference that had to be cancelled at the beginning of the pandemic. There will not be a concurrent online option this year. However, the March 2023 Spring Symposium will be the first step in a new pattern of balancing both in-person and online opportunities. The preference for both in-person and online experiences was clear in the post conference survey feedback.

Health and Safety Protocols. ASBA and the Renaissance Battle House Hotel and Spa  (and the Renaissance Riverview Plaza Hotel) will follow Health and Safety laws, rules, regulations, and guidelines established  by the State of Alabama, the city of Mobile, and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) (collectively, the “Regulations”). While on hotel premises, attendees agree to comply with all Regulations in effect at the time of the conference and any additional rules and regulations imposed on hotel guests or at other conference venues including the Mobile Botanical Garden and the exhibition venue.

WORKSHOP-Graphite and Watercolor, a Surprising Marriage with Irina Neascu
WORKSHOP-Graphite and Watercolor, a Surprising Marriage with Irina Neascu

The delicate relationship between unicity and diversity has been bothered philosophers from all times, in a continuous aesthetic search of expressing diversity without creating chaos, as well as unicity without generating boredom. We might find ourselves facing the same dilemma in front of a new painting idea, questioning the relevance of scientific over artistic approach, or maybe accuracy over stylization. Mixing techniques is a risky chance that could indeed lead towards a very surprising marriage and an authentic personal touch to botanical art compositions. My mix aims to show both the individual and the community, the botanical details as well as the habitat, as I believe all plants that we so carefully depict on bright white background actually come from an extremely complex ecosystem, and display themselves an enormous variety of metamorphoses. This workshop is a step into mixing graphite and watercolor for a rich and powerful composition. This is exactly why we will take time to question and explore composition until we find its best representation in order to suit the story we want to invest in our work. Then we discuss the proportion and the balance between the monochrome, the color and the white space, understanding how the mix of techniques serves a graphic approach. I will demonstrate working in both techniques, also sharing examples of my work and talking over the various choices of composition.

This workshop is suitable for advanced and intermediates, looking to sharpen their skills as well as to better understand the mixing of techniques.

Day 1 – exploring composition as a language to tell our story in botanical art. Drawing, transferring the drawing and preparing first layers.

Day 2 – detailing, creating depth and focus, adding details.

Techniques Showcase on Stage
Techniques Showcase on Stage
Mary Dillon, Margaret Saylor and Shevaun Doherty demonstrate techniques in three distinct segments.

Mary Dillon - 'Going with the flow!'

Using controlled wet, damp and dry painting techniques, try layering to create the nuances of color and character you find on a petal in large format. (of an azalea or a rose?)

Margaret Saylor - Graphite and Watercolor Fungi

Depicting mushrooms and fungi on vellum allows for the inherent spookiness of the subject to take center stage. A bit of watercolor, a lot of graphite, and some deeply interesting vellum lets Margaret Saylor tell the whole story: subject, habitat, and setting in a highly detailed, atmospheric way.

Shevaun Doherty - 'Dare to go dark with Watercolor’.
Are you tempted to explore deep tones and rich, saturated color, but afraid to take the plunge? Shevaun will explain how to go dark in watercolor, using layering techniques to create luminous and glowing darks.

CLASS Botanical Drawing with Colored Inks with Derek Norman

Students will first be introduced to the classical tradition of working with sepia ink. Slowly migrating to the use of additional colored inks to realize a new and a fresh dimension in their work.

For centuries classic botanical art has relied on pen and essentially black and sepia inks to bring forth and reveal the rich botanical beauty and detail of plant species. With the availability of the new concentrated pigmented inks, color adds a  new ingredient to the presentation of plant drawings. Students will discover a whole new set of possibilities for depicting color in plants to give your work added impact and vitality.

CLASS "From Field to Studio" with Susan Tomlinson
CLASS "From Field to Studio" with Susan Tomlinson

Sometimes we have a subject that can’t be moved into the studio and studied at leisure. In these instances, the quality of the information we gather in the field is critical to helping us create the paintings and drawings in the studio. But if our field time is limited, we need to work efficiently and wisely to be certain we will have what we need to create a successful work of art. This workshop will focus on how to do that. We will use the first hour to consider what information might be needed, sketch the key components of a plant, make notes, color match, and take reference photos. Then we will create a preliminary drawing for a final work using only our “fieldwork” as a reference. As a bonus, we will also cover tips for planning and organizing a long-term project with multiple subjects to be recorded.

TOUR Bellingrath Gardens-Mobile Botanical Gardens
TOUR Bellingrath Gardens-Mobile Botanical Gardens

Bellingrath Gardens and Home, the state’s oldest public garden, first opened to the public in 1932. This 65-acre estate garden and historic home on Fowl River in south Mobile County offers blooms and beauty every day of the year. The property was purchased in 1907 by Walter Bellingrath, president of the Coca Cola Bottling Company in Mobile, to use as a fishing camp. Walter’s wife Bessie worked tirelessly to create the gardens and home which is now open to the public and contains the original furnishings.

Mobile Botanical Gardens, established in 1974, consists of 100 acres of gardens, deep woods trails, and Longleaf conservation forest, offering something for everyone. Primary collections include the internationally recognized K.Sawada Camellia WinterGarden, the Millie McConnell Rhododendron Garden, the John Allen Smith Japanese Maple Garden, and the Aromi Hybrid Azalea Garden, among others.

Your bus will leave the hotel at 8:00 AM and make a brief stop at Mobile Botanical Gardens to drop off artists taking classes there. The tour group will then travel to Bellingrath Gardens where you are invited to explore two miles of handicap accessible pathways on a self-guided tour of the grounds and home.

The group will depart from Bellingrath at 11:30 AM and return to Mobile Botanical Gardens for a box lunch and a guided tour. The bus will leave MBG at 3:30 PM and return to the hotel.

Comfortable walking shoes and a hat are recommended. For further information about these two gardens see https://bellingrath.org/ and  https://mobilebotanicalgardens.org/

CLASS Splinter Hill Bog Preserve Tour with Field Study and Sketching
CLASS Splinter Hill Bog Preserve Tour with Field Study and Sketching

Splinter Hill Bog Preserve is a 2,100 acre property maintained by the Nature Conservancy. It is a biologically rich ecosystem consisting of wetlands, longleaf pine forests, creeks and gently rolling hills and home to one of the largest white-topped pitcher plant bogs in the world.  Some of the other unique and rare plants at Splinter Hill include: Chapman’s butterwort, yellow trumpets, sundews, spoonflower, pineland bogbutton, yellow-eyed grass, and many orchids and asters. Botanical highlights in October will include lycopodium, sundews, and white topped pitcher plants.

During the day, half of the participants will spend time with botanist Dr. Judy Stout, who will discuss the unique aspects of this area and introduce a few of the key plants in this habitat. This half of the session will be discovering and sketching these new botanical specimens with Deborah Ravin. The other half of the class will join Lara Call Gastinger to learn sketchbook techniques that can help create a successful sketchbook page. After lunch, the two groups will switch.  There are trails at the bog, but participants should be able to navigate uneven ground. Covered shoes, preferably water resistant, are recommended. Bring a hat or umbrella, water, sunscreen, and insect repellent since there is very little shade at the bog, and insects are a given.

The bus will leave the hotel at 8:00 AM and arrive at Splinter Hill at approximately 9:00 after a brief stop at a nearby service station to allow passengers to use the restrooms. There will also be a restroom on the bus for your convenience during the day. Boxed lunches, water, and folding chairs will be provided.

The bus will leave the bog at 3:30 PM and return to the hotel.

LECTURE Native Pollinators and Partnerships with Dr. Culberson and daughter Veronica
LECTURE Native Pollinators and Partnerships with Dr. Culberson and daughter Veronica

Join Dr. Donald Culberson and Veronica Culberson as they discuss their experiences with gardening and beekeeping, as well as experience as an entomology professor at Spring Hill College, to focus on pollinators, insects and otherwise. Almost a decade ago, we realized that certain vegetable plants were being inadequately pollinated and decided to take up beekeeping as a hopeful remedy. It became clear that there was a dearth of native pollinators in the area. Since then, we have enjoyed speaking to a variety of groups about beekeeping, pollination, and environmental stewardship. We will address causes for what is often termed the "insect apocalypse," and our efforts to reverse the trend, at least in our immediate environment.

Dr. Donald Culberson is an Associate Professor of Biology at Spring Hill College where he teaches, among various topics, Entomology, the study of insects. Collaborating with his daughter, Veronica Culberson, he maintains apiaries in multiple locations around Mobile, Alabama. He and Veronica began their beekeeping ventures almost a decade ago upon realizing that pollinators were in steady decline regionally, and, particularly, around their own vegetable garden. Since then they have expanded their “hobby” into the educational field giving talks on the subjects of beekeeping and the importance of native pollinators.

Veronica Culberson is the primary organizer for Honey of the Hill Apiaries and the Official Beekeeper of the Mobile Botanical Gardens. She is an avid gardener, wildflower, and fungus enthusiast. In addition to giving joint presentations on beekeeping and pollination with her father, she is frequently in demand for giving similar programs to children’s groups of all ages.

LECTURE Conservation of an 18th Century Botanical Painting on Parchment with Jenni Krchak

“Conservation of an 18th century Botanical Painting on Parchment”
A collection from France’s Golden Age of botanical illustration, the conservation of a beautiful gouache painting on parchment, treatment challenges, and a fascinating discovery about the plants depicted - This presentation will focus on the research and treatment of a painting from the vaults of the American Philosophical Society, which was founded in Philadelphia by Benjamin Franklin in 1743. The painting comes from the Duhamel du Monceau and Fougeroux de Bondaroy papers, a collection dating from 1716 – 1789, and encompass everything from botanical illustrations and specimens to unpublished book plates to agricultural essays.

Jenni Krchak is a Graduate Fellow specializing in the conservation of works of art on paper at the Garman Art Conservation Department at SUNY Buffalo State University where she will receive dual M.A./M.S. degrees (Class of 2024). She holds a B.A. in Art History from the University of South Alabama in her hometown of Mobile, AL. Prior to her graduate studies, she worked as the outreach coordinator at the Mobile Botanical Gardens and as a book designer for Negative Capability Press. She completed pre-program internships including hurricane recovery work at Vizcaya Museum and Gardens in Miami, wall painting conservation at a medieval church in Wiltshire, England, and book and paper conservation at the Georgia Archives. This past summer she interned at the American Philosophical Society in Philadelphia and will be completing her third-year placement at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts in Richmond. Jenni is also an avid baker and proud keeper of her spoiled and well-traveled cat, Lucy.

Saturday Evening Banquet and Awards Presentations

Enjoy a relaxing dinner with friends new and old. We will honor members’ achievements at the grand finale of ASBA’s conference activities and preview the 2024 Pittsburgh Conference. We are excited to welcome our keynote speaker Ruth Stiff, Curator, International Exhibitions Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew.

Rory McEwen: A New Perspective on Nature -- When Painting Breathes Poetry

Ruth L. A. Stiff, Curator of International Exhibitions at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew presents the vibrant and varied career of the renowned Scottish artist, Rory McEwen (1932 –1982), whose genius lay in reasserting the power of realism while infusing a modern sensibility into the centuries-old genre of botanical art. With his technical sophistication of capturing light and color, and his distinctive use of space, McEwen blurred the boundaries between botanical illustration and modern art, thereby changing the course of botanical art and inspiring a whole new generation of artists.

While discussing the traveling exhibition by the same name, presented in association with the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew in collaboration with Mellon’s Oak Spring Garden Foundation, Ruth will address the wide array of challenges facing a curator in mounting a major exhibition where the source of the content is derived from numerous public and private lenders and where the artwork must safely and without incident cross international borders. The audience will be taken behind the scenes, through the labyrinthine preparations required of a curator to produce an exhibition of this complexity.

POST-CONFERENCE WORKSHOP ‘Lifting the lid on Pitcher Plants’ with Shevaun Doherty
POST-CONFERENCE WORKSHOP ‘Lifting the lid on Pitcher Plants’ with Shevaun Doherty

Sarracenias are fascinating specimens with their intricate veins and subtle guard hairs. We will make a short visit to Splinter Hill Bog Preserve to see pitchers in their natural habitat. The focus of this workshop will be 'mapping' patterns onto form in watercolor. Pattern detail needs to be subtle otherwise it can flatten form ... Shevaun will show how to overcome this. Learn how Shevaun exploits light and shadow to modify pattern and texture details. Both wet on damp and dry brush techniques will be used. Confidence with this 'mapping' process will also benefit any future projects of patterned leaves, florals, edibles and more.

Audubon Bird Sanctuary (Dauphin Island)

Dauphin Island has been named one of the top four locations in North America for viewing spring migrations! The Sanctuary consists of 137 acres of maritime forest, marshes, and dunes, including a lake, a swamp, and a beach. Recently, the 3-mile trail system within the Sanctuary has been designated as a National Recreational Trail. It is located at the Eastern end of Dauphin Island, a 14-mile-long barrier island situated off the Alabama Gulf Coast. The Sanctuary is of vital importance because it is the largest segment of protected forest on the Island and the first landfall for neo-tropical migrant birds after their long flight across the Gulf from Central and South America each spring. Here these birds, often exhausted and weakened from severe weather during the long flight, find their first food and shelter. Of the 445 species officially documented in Alabama presently, 420 (95%) have been observed on the island. It is also their final stop before their return flight each fall. The Bird Sanctuary has allowed Dauphin Island to be recognized by the National Audubon Society as being “Globally Important” for bird migrations.https://www.townofdauphinisland.org/audubon-bird-sanctuary

The Estuarium showcases the plants, animals, and other natural resources found in the Estuary and its surrounding marine habitats.
